What’s the most wonderful trip you’ve ever been on?
The most wonderful trips are always trips that involve a map and a car. I love road trips. I have been on some amazing ones with friends touring around Italy following the Dave Matthews Band. Driving all night to hear Damien Rice in Memphis or driving up and down mountain canyon to experience the Indigo Girls. I am truly blessed. The most recent amazing trip I was graced with was with my daughter, Amelia. She is getting married in June so we decided to take one last mother / single daughter trip together. My uncle gave me his old road atlas and we set out from Wisconsin with only knowing our end goal of Seattle. We had an amazing adventure visiting National Parks, camping in as many ‘free’ spots as we could, finding the best places to hang our hammock. We found some spectacular spots to practice a little yoga on the road too. We visited the Badlands, Mt. Rushmore, Glacier NP, Yellowstone NP, and the Grand Tetons. We experienced the amazing sights and sounds of driving across the wide open plain of Wyoming. The last day of our road trip was spent in downtown Seattle along the famous marketplace. I stayed in the moment during that entire trip, savoring each second with the shining soul that is my daughter.
What advise or tools can your share with our Bliss students about finding mindfulness and a calm “on the road”?
Breathe. It is easy to get wrapped up in the moments, as they are coming one right after another. It is so important to take time at each destination to savor the sights and sounds of each unique location. I am constantly reminding myself of a Thich Nhat Hanh quote, “I have arrived. I am home. My destination is in each step.” I am always in search of a place to sit for a few mindful minutes or even break out the yoga mat for a few stretches and twists, allowing the bliss and joy of the experience to become part of my fiber. Music did fit it’s way into this road trip! We flew to San Francisco and went to a Phish concert at the remarkable Billy Graham Civic Auditorium! My next ‘blog’ you’ll meet the amazing Montana, Amelia’s younger brother, we’ve been on some amazing trips too!
