Yin yoga is a slow-paced style of yoga with poses, or asanas, that are held for longer periods of time 3 to 5 five minutes. We use this to stimulate and therapeutically stretch the connective tissues that wrap around our muscles and joints. We learn to listen to our bodies and come into the suggested shape finding our appropriate edge where we feel the stretch. The simple practice of becoming still and quiet for several minutes is in itself very challenging and can be combined with mindfulness meditation. This practice is highly beneficial for your nervous system, organs, muscles and joints.
With yin yoga we are trying to access the deeper tissues such as the connective tissue and fascia and many of the postures focus on areas that encompass a joint (hips, sacrum, spine). As one ages flexibility in the joints decreases and Yin yoga is a wonderful way to maintain that flexibility.
